MRP SXG Chain Guide – ultra light and friction free chain guide

Although narrow wide style chain rings work really well, many riders riding rougher trails or racing want a little bit of security, for those just-in-case moments.

We tested the AMg guide previously – which was a simple upper guide, and a bash plate lower. This works excellently – but the SXG is a few steps up, and is suitable for both trail bikes and downhill bikes.

MRP SXG Chain Guide

The MRP SXG Chain Guide is a very clean looking chain guide that doesn’t contact the chain at all, and runs totally silent.

The Detail

The MRP SXG Chain Guide fits via a rear plate on ISCG mounts, and has both an upper and lower guide. Weight is 149grams for the alloy version we tested – carbon is 106grams.

Unlike the minimal AMG, the SXG has a large fully enclosed guide on the top. This guide is adjustable for different chain ring sizes and whilst providing ultimate security up top, doesn’t contact the chain in any gear.

Soft TPU rubber on the inside of the cage keeps chain noise to a minimum when riding through rough terrain.

The upper cage of the MRP SXG Chain Guide features a rubber coating on the inside to silence the chain when it bounces around. The cage swings open for easy access to the chain, or for removing the crank/chain ring.

The lower part of the MRP SXG Chain Guide incorporates a bash plate with a lower retention guide. This does nothing to hold the chain on to the chain ring – it’s there purely to stop it derailing. Like the upper cage, the lower part of the guide doesn’t contact the chain at all, and even on the roughest terrain noise is virtually non-existent thanks to the rubber lining.

The lower guide swings out of the way for full access to the chainring without having to remove the lower cage. Made from a tough nylon material, the bash plate not only stops your chain ring from getting wrecked, it slides over rocks and logs with ease.

The lower bash plate swings out the way on a chainring style bolt, for easy access to the chainring/crank.

Even in the extremes of a 1 x 11 speed drivetrain, the chain does not contact the inner or outer cages – top or bottom. The MRP SXG Chain Guide is totally silent.

On the trail

With the same familiar quality and layout of the AMg, the SXg is very simple to set up, and once out on the trails is very quiet. Infact you’d be pushed to notice it’s even doing it’s job – until you ride something really choppy.

Then the chain can knock against the bottom cage a touch, but can not go anywhere. Narrow wide set ups work great, but on really rough tracks can come unstuck. When sprinting on uneven terrain a guide like this definitely gives you peace of mind.

MRP SXG Chain Guide

Yep, there’s an MRP SXG Chain Guide in there. And it was working fine too!

As with all chain guides, mud can clog them up – but we only suffered a couple of times with the upper guide clogging. Check the above photo – the guide still worked and was still quiet. We’re sold!

We Say

The MRP SXG Chain Guide is a great heavy-duty chain guide that runs completely silent. The bash plate protects your chain ring too – which is great for low bottom bracket heights.

The device works excellently and will compliment any hard hitting Enduro or Downhill rig.
