The UCI Question

Who is the UCI and do we need them in our sport? There has been a lot of press recently about the UCI that has hit global headlines, but all this negative press has been to do with road bikes and a rider that had a cameo in Dodgeball. The UCI is probably seen to the average mountain biker as a very road biased organisation that doesn’t really have much time for riders that like a bit of off-road gravity assistance to get their thrills.

The thing is that the UCI have a big affect on our sport and have also been making the headlines in the MTB media recently with the dropping of 4X, the broadcasting rights to DH and now recently, the decision to not back an Enduro series… So they do have a affect on us after all! Like many mountain bikers out there, I would like to try and understand their organisation a bit better and get a well rounded opinion of what they actually do and bring to our sport.

It is human nature to fight against the rules, it is also so much easier to have a negative outlook on an organisation that we feel aren’t one hundred percent behind our sport. But is this the right view to have? So, over the next few months we will be looking into this and getting first hand views from key people that have worked for or, and with the UCI, so that you and I can get a better impartial view of the UCI.

On Monday we will be putting up a in-depth interview with Martin Whiteley giving a great insight into not only to the UCI, but also some amazing moments in mountain bike history…. Stay tuned!
