Adam Wight from Factory Jackson | MTB Essentials
This is the fourth part of our MTB Essentials series where we talk to industry workers and fellow riders about five MTB related things they simply can’t be without.
Some folks might pick the latest and greatest carbon fibre super bikes – but others will be delving in their riding bags to pull out trusty multi-tools a decade old…
Last time we spoke to Sandy Plenty, who runs The Trailhead Bicycle Company. Check it out right here
In part 4, we chat to Adam Wight – our upside down-faced MTB tester and writer here at Factory Jackson. Adam Wight is one of the key characters here at Factory Jackson, and will soon be moving to New Zealand where he’ll become our roving Antipodean MTB reporter.
Adam rides every day, and is quite literally obsessed with mountain biking. Spending a lot of time in the outdoors, Adam Wight is particularly critical of bike kit that doesn’t work – and is usually the first to let everyone know. His critical eye does mean he’s good at picking out gems though, and the following five things are Adam’s absolute MTB essentials…
Shimano SPD trail pedals
“Over the years I have tried absolutely everything else and despite the merits of other designs – just don’t get on with them. As well as having mastered the concept first, Shimano offers the most precise engagement out there. You have that assurance of being firmly ‘in’ and they generally last far longer than the competition with far less maintenance. I’d honestly struggle to ever use anything else!”
Shimano XT Trail SPD pedals retail for £79.99 and you can get them via the UK distributor Madison. Find out your nearest stockist right here.
Exped XXS Waterproof phone pouch
“I spend most my time outdoors, but always have my phone with me. This ultra lightweight pouch is super tough and durable, and never lets moisture into the phone – even when stored in a jersey pocket with it absolutely hosing it down! The winter we’ve just had, and the fact I’m on the same handset speaks volumes about how good this pouch is!”
The Exped XXS water proof pouch retails for £8.99 and you can get them from Cotswold Outdoors
Sealskinz Hydrostop socks
“Sealskinz make the best waterproof socks on the market. And weather is so changeable in the UK, that even on drier days I seem to don the Hydrostops. Granted, they’re a little warm sometimes but are a decent length and super durable! I combine them with the Specialized 2FO shoe – which is well ventilated and not so waterproof – which makes for a great combination”
Sealskinz Hydrostop socks retail for £39 and are available from Sealskinz. Read our review RIGHT HERE
Julbo Dust glasses
“I can’t ride without some kind of protection on my eyes, and the glasses I keep coming back to are the Julbo Dust glasses. They are Photochronic and uber comfy – very scratched, and now fog up, but still the go-to units. Can’t say more than that!”
Julbo Dust glasses retail for £40 and you can get them right here
Stem Captain clock
“I hate wearing a watch when riding, but like to keep an eye on the time. I’ve used a Stem Captain for years now, as they look cool, tell the time and are unaffected by the weather. Simple and a great use of space”
Stem Captain’s retail from £17.95 and you can get them here. Check out our review RIGHT HERE
