As well as the conventional Allen key based multi-tool, puncture repair kit, pump and the other things you’d expect to find in a mountain bikers riding pack, another essential is a pliers multi-tool – which will come in handy more often than you might imagine.
The Charge Ti from multi-tool giant Leatherman contains a whopping 17 tools – but unlike many other similar tools are pretty much all usable. And as you may have guessed, it’s partially made from Titanium, which keeps the weight down 247g and helps resist corrosion – a bonus if you leaves your tools in a damp riding pack.
The quality really is fantastic, and it’s lovely to use. It’s certainly not cheap by any means, but it is a buy-once item and comes with a reassuringly hefty 25-year warranty. This particular tool comes with imperial Allen head bits – which is a bit of a pain for metric based bike components, though could still be used as a get-you-home. The rest of the tool is still very handy and works well in combination with a more traditional bike-specific Allen key based tool.
The tools featured on the Charge Ti are:
- 75mm knife blade
- 8in | 19cm ruler
- Bottle opener
- Can Opener
- Diamond coated file
- Hard wire cutters
- Large bit driver
- Small bit driver
- Included bits – Phillips and flat head eyeglasses screwdriver bit; Allen bits to fit 5/32″,9/64″, 1/8″, 7/64″ and 1/16″ and a large screwdriver head.
- Needle nose pliers
- Regular pliers
- Saw
- Scissors
- Serrated knife blade
- Wire cutters
- Wire stripper
- Wood/metal file
Finishing it off, the tool comes in a sturdy leather pouch that can be belt mounted – should you go for the MacGuyver look.
We say:
One of the nicest pliers multi-tools we’ve seen, and it has wire cutters good enough to get through gear cables if you need to out on the trail. There are more tools on it than you probably think you need, but you’ll use most of them over the years.
