Evoc FR Supertrail 20L – a multi use day pack
Although most riders I know – myself included – tend to use the smallest size riding packs available, sometimes you need to be able to take more kit.
Big days out in the hills require spares; clothing; food and more – and alpine adventures need loads of kit to be on the safe side.
The Evoc FR Supertrail 20litre is a huge bag, crammed with excellent features that make it a versatile pack on or off the bike. I’ve been using this pack most the year as a light duty camera pack, with the Evoc Camera Block 12 litre inside – and have found it absolutely invaluable to my work flow for Factory Jackson.
The Detail
The Evoc FR Supertrail has a huge 20litre capacity, and features the removable Evoc back protector that is required by some race formats.
The protector is located in the rear compartment, and can be worn on it’s own as the whole back of the bag un-zips. The back protector panel can also be removed from the bag – giving you more room.
It only weighs 145 grams though, so you’re really better off leaving it in place.
As with everything from the German sports pack company, the quality of the Evoc FR Supertrail is top end. The fabrics used are tough enough to withstand constant use – but are not so thick that the bags weigh too much.
The exterior of the back features adjustable shoulder straps with load straps; a sternum strap with whistle buckle and the large velcro waist strap with quick release buckles. There are also load straps for carrying pads or similar on the bottom of the pack, and a rain cover in a zippered compartment.
There is a zippered pocket on the waist strap, external storage pockets on both sides and a large helmet cradle. The cradle has a suede material that helps grip the helmet too, without scratching it – nice touch.
Under the helmet cradle is a large zippered compartment with internal organiser pockets – perfect for storing tools so they don’t rattle about.
This compartment opens out fully for decent trailside access.
The top of the bag has a small zippered compartment that’s ideal for glasses or goggles, and the main inside compartment is cavernous – ideal for filling with waterproof jackets; inner tubes; lunch for five greedy people or anything else you insist on carrying.
In my case, this is where I slot the 12 litre Evoc camera block, for my on-the-go photo set up.
Inside the 12 litre block, I carry a body; 70-200mm lens; a 24-70mm and a wide angle – plus spare batteries and cards. It’s the perfect size set up for trail side action without ruining the ride. Granted, this set up is not as fast, convenient or protective as a proper camera bag, but this set up inside the Evoc FR Supertrail means I can carry just enough and it doesn’t affect my riding too much.
Out On The Trail
Like most of the range, the Evoc FR Supertrail is available in 3 different lengths to suit your torso size. Check your sizing out right here .
Although 6’3″, I have long arms and legs, and my torso isn’t that long – so I went for a size med/large. It fits perfectly, and with the load straps on the shoulders and waist strap adjusted properly the bag pretty much doesn’t move when on my back.
It really is exceptionally comfortable – I especially like the wide waist strap that tightens up with velcro and secures with quick release buckles – you can stop the bag moving on your back without the waist strap digging in and becoming uncomfortable.
Whilst the quality of the Evoc range of bags is unquestionable, it’s important to note that they do not come with a hydration bladder. There is a decent storage pocket and hose routing though – so make sure you factor in a suitable bladder to your budget.
The Evoc FR Supertrail is a lovely bit of kit – and is absolutely massive internally. For use as a camera bag, I love it – though it’s probably a little large for what I like to carry on a daily basis. The ideal Evoc bag from that point of view for me would probably be the Stage 12l .
But for allowing me to carry camera kit around and not get in the way of riding – it’s brilliant.
We Say
The Evoc FR Supertrail riding pack has a cavernous 20litre volume that can be used for anything from day rides to bike packing in warmer months.
The inclusion of a back protector is great for those interested in Enduro and stage racing, and the overall construction and fit is excellent. If the Supertrail is doesn’t suit you at 20litres, check out the Evoc website as they have bags ranging from 3litres all the way to an enormous 55litres!
