Trek 2017 – New Plus Size Fuel, and farewell to the Remedy 29

Trek aren’t a brand known for simply speccing the latest kit and giving their bikes an annual lick of paint – they constantly strive to produce the best bikes possible.

The first Trek 2017 models unveiled that make us perk up are the Fuel EX and Remedy platforms.

Here’s the lowdown…

The Trek 2017 Fuel EX is a sleek looking machine – and ready to rip on both 29in or 27.5+ wheels. It’s by far the best looking trail bike that Trek as produced and we can’t wait to let rip on a 29in model! Photo | Sterling Lorence

Last year the Fuel EX was certainly more of a trail bike, with it’s 27.5in wheels and 120mm of travel – but for 2017 Trek has remodelled the bike to allow for both 29in and 27.5+ size wheels to be used.

In doing so they have reworked the frame, making it much stiffer and have added more travel.

Here are the main points about the Trek 2017 Fuel EX:

  1. One frame, two material options – Alloy or Carbon
  2. Compatible with 29in or 27.5+ wheels
  3. Some models specced with 29in, others with 27.5+
  4. Travel increased 10mm to 130mm front and rear
  5. Head angle is slacker – 67.7deg in HIGH position, 67deg in Low
  6. Boost compatible
  7. Longer reach on all sizes
  8. Lower BB on all sizes
  9. Mino Link allows High or Low BB settings, and head angle adjustment
  10. Lighter, stiffer frame with new Straight Shot down tube design
  11. Knock Block steering protection system – prevents fork crown and bar controls damaging the frame
  12. 27.5+ runs 140mm fork to keep geometry the same
  13. Metric shocks now used
  14. 7x models in the range (all 7 available in 29in, 3x available in 27.5+)
  15. 3x WSD – Woman Specific Design – models
  16. Woman’s size 14in and 15.5in run 27.5+ wheels
  17. Woman’s size 17.5in and 18.5in run 29in wheels

The new Knock Block system is a neat solution to expensive frame damage caused by crashes or even putting your bike in the boot of your car.

The system is a compatible with both Bontrager stems which are keyed specifically, or with aftermarket stems and a clamp headset spacer. This system is on the Trek 2017 Fuel EX and Remedy – and you can expect to see it on other high end models too.

The Knock Block system features on Trek 2017 models, and is designed to protect the top tube and down tube from strikes by the fork crown, or brake and gear levers.
