Stans Race formula is king of the sealants…

Stans NoTubes tyre sealant is the number one tubeless tyre sealant on the market. The milky, low viscosity liquid seals most minor punctures out on the trail, and helps seal the tyre too against air leaks from installation.

It’s an absolute essential if considering running tubeless, but does suffer a touch when it comes to bigger holes.

Now available is the new Stans Race Sealant – with much bigger particles, and superior performance.

Stans Race

We’ve been using Stans Race fluid back to back against the regular fluid. Although the regular fluid is ample for most riders, the increased protection offered by the Stans Race fluid is a marked improvement. Due to the cost, some riders might avoid it – though we would recommend using it on the rear wheel, and conventional fluid up front if you want to save in the long term.

The new Stans Race formula is more expensive than the regular sealant – coming in at £8 more for the 946ml. As well as the cost, it will need topping up more often as it will dry up faster. Stans say it will last up to 6 months, whereas the conventional fluid will last up to 7months.

Unlike the conventional Stans formula, the Stans Race liquid has far bigger particles – and a lot more of them too. This means you have to pour it direct in to the tyre as it clogs injectors and valves.

We tried Stans Race on four different tyre/rim set ups – three of which were non-tubeless rims with gorilla tape and tubeless valves in place. All tyres inflated first time and we had no leaks.

Running at lower pressures, even burps are sealed almost instantaneously – and we’ve had holes of varying sizes from 2mm to 6mm sealed up, without a major loss of pressure.

We also conducted a simple test where we inflated two new Schwalbe tyres to 30psi, one with Stans Race and the other with Stans regular – and got to work with various implements to see how things worked.

We Say

The new Stans Race fluid is certainly a lot more effective in various situations – but it costs more and won’t last as long in the tyre. However, if you want the extra protection and want to save money too, a good option would be to use conventional Stans fluid on your front wheel, and the high performance Stans Race fluid out back – where you tend to get the bulk of bigger punctures…
