Royal Racing Matrix – heavy duty jacket for repeat use
Available in bright green or trusty black, this heavy duty jacket is is great on and off the bike and washes up well. It doesn’t have the closest cut though, making it more suitable for uplifts or day long jaunts rather than high octane thrashes. It’s the work horse of the MTB Waterproof Jackets in our group test.
Made from a 10,000mm waterproof and 10,000mm breathable polyester shell fabric with seam sealing, the Matrix has a full mesh lining for comfort, warmth and wicking. The main zip and huge side pocket zips are fully waterproof, and if overheating the side pockets can be partially un-zipped to act as vents.
The huge helmet compatible hood is the biggest of the lot, fitting fully over a trail helmet and has a 3 point adjustment.
There are reflective details and a vent at the top of the back, and internal routing for a media player.
Likes
- Simple and heavy duty construction resists scuffs
- Huge side pockets can store goggles and similar sized objects with ease
- Hood easily big enough to use whilst riding in heavy downpours without interfering with movement
- Breathable enough for most rides
- Washes up really well
Gripes
- Simple fabric construction can get damp on the inside in severe weather
- Huge hood not so good off the bike
- Cut not as good for intense riding
We Say
When it comes to howling wind and rain, the enclosed feel of the Matrix jacket makes it feel like one of the best MTB waterproof jackets. Although the Matrix can get a little damp inside from extended rides in severe conditions, the fact it washes up so well is a huge bonus. We’ve jet-washed ours several times, and had it through the washing machine a lot. And it’s every bit as waterproof as day one.
You’re always comfortable in the Matrix, and if you get on with the cut it’s a great value jacket that will last you a few years.
