Fully featured compact riding camera pack

Evoc have several options for carrying camera equipment with you out on the trails, ranging from the full professional spec CP35 down to the compact camera blocks that fit inside a regular riding pack.

The Photo Scout is the ideal compromise that utilises a heavy-duty construction with a lot of padding, but a compact size that doesn’t hamper riding. It’s ideal for an SLR and two or three lenses – as well as your usual riding kit.

Read on for our review of the Evoc Photo Scout camera bag review…

Evoc Photo Scout

The Photo Scout is a clean looking bag, and is well balanced even when fully loaded.

If you’re into photography you probably already own a camera bag – but it may well come in too big for riding in, and you probably carry way too much in it. The Photo Scout is an 18litre pack, with a dedicated camera compartment in the bottom half of the bag that is accessed from the rear. There is also a handy side access just to get the camera out.

The camera compartment features completely a customisable layout – the padded sections are held in place by velcro – which can be set up to securely store what you need.

The camera compartment is accessed from the rear, and safely stores a body and three lenses, plus your essentials.

The upper compartment can be used for riding kit and tools, whilst a sunglass compartment is ideal for smaller items and the huge side pocket can accept a hydration bladder.  The external of the bag features twin ski/climbing pole hooks and a cradle to hold the base of a tripod – which is secured with a strap at the top of the bag, doubling as compression strap.

As with other Evoc packs there is a wide, stretchy waist band that can be worn snug without digging in – and keeps the pack in place. The waist strap has twin zippered pockets – the ideal size for your car keys, a multi-tool or loose change.

As with all Evoc gear, the detail is really nice. Quality zippers; decent internal compartments and a handy side access for the camera.

Compact load

Although the Photo Scout accepts up to a 3 litre hydration pack, I couldn’t bring myself to carry one in the same bag as my camera and kit so preferred to use the pocket to hold an aluminium bottle.

In the pack, I managed to fit a Canon SLR; 200mm telephoto lens and two other lenses – as well as a spare battery, flash cards etc. Although you can just about get an SLR with battery grip in the bag, it does make getting the camera in and out a bit of a faff. Something like a 7D or 5D fits perfectly.

This amount of kit is a good amount to snap some decent shots on the trail without interfering with your ride. The next bag up is 26litres and far more suitable for carrying flashes and additional tripods.  The Photo Scout is better suited to the quick snapper.

It does carry a single tripod well though – the cradle puts the tripod in a low position – so you don’t hit the back of your helmet when riding.

The Photo Scout holds a tripod securely in a position that doesn’t get in the way when riding.

We say

The Photo Scout is a fantastic little bag, and is ideal for the photo enthusiast and the working professional alike. It stores enough kit to get the job done, but isn’t too heavy when full. The compact size also stores the weight low down, which means even with a heavy lens like a Canon 70-200 f2.8 the weight isn’t an issue for attacking the trails.

Although we’ve not crashed wearing the bag – we’re sure the amount of padding is more than adequate to keep your kit protected. We don’t fancy trusting a hydration bladder though!

If you need a little more storage, then you could take a look at the more substantial Cp26.
