Brandon Semenuk in Revel in the Chaos

August 6th, 2015

By Andrew Dodd

The best £4 you can spend right now.

If I could ride like anyone, it would be either Chris Akrigg, or Brandon Semenuk. What Chris does is largely beyond physics – but it does kind of make sense. You can imagine yourself doing it I guess, which is why it’s so amazing – despite being out of reach for all but 1% of riders on earth.

Semenuk is a different kind of impressive though – his is more textbook style and precision. Everything he does has perfect form and grace. He manages to pull off tricks that scream and shout, in a keep calm, carry on fashion. He’d kill it in dressage if he ever got bored of bikes.

So his new short film – £4 and 17  minutes worth.

When something big comes out, it’s easy to drop in on that same wave and enjoy the ride – or deliberately ignore it when your Facebook feed becomes saturated.

But really, you must watch Revel in the Chaos right away.

Ever felt scared watching a rider tank-slap his way through something gnarly, but when you ride the same line you feel totally at ease? You get this same thing watching fighter pilots too – on the outside the jet is screaming through the sky pulling negative G-dives, push overs and all sorts – but in the cockpit the pilot is calm, in control and probably on the radio telling mission control exactly what he’s doing.

Semenuk is like this. He is the MTB equivalent of Iceman from Topgun.

Ice cold. No mistakes.

Brandon Semenuk is probably the most stylish and accomplished freeride mountain biker on the planet. He has an enormous trick bag, and every single one is perfected – his riding style is text book.

Unlike a lot of other videos that have a plot, dramatic slow motion, expensive effects etc – this is just action. Wham, bam – all killer, absolutely no filler.  Every shot is a banger.

Show this to your BMX mates and they’ll be blown away. Hell, even your girlfriend who you already subject to way too many bike videos will like this. It’s crammed.

Tricks that many struggle to even fathom, Semenuk has down on all his bikes. Even on his downhill bike he’s throwing down the slowest, most stylish 360’s you’ve ever seen – and even a corked 720. Just incredible to watch.

I caught myself saying ‘f***’ under my breath more than once, but after a while it actually became funny. Semenuk throws in so many tricks on big airs that it’s not physically possible, surely. Corked 720 on a downhill bike? Flip whip to bar spin? Opposite whip 3 on to the box to corked flip off? I laughed a lot during the second half of the video – it’s that daft.

The scale of jumps and the tricks he’s pulling on them does make you wonder though – humans can’t do computer game tricks – so it surely must involve a bit of CGI. Roadies did the doping thing; and now are being accused of mechanical doping.

Would a little CGI assistance for mountain biking be a bad thing? Look at this gap he pulls in Utah – it is absolutely bonkers to think someone would attempt it. It’s probably just a 20ft double down the local BMX track with a bit of green screen action…

On a serious note – just watch the damned video and see how insane it is. Brandon Semenuk – you are a nutter.

There needs to be more bike films like this. It’s punchy, fast paced, exciting and worth every penny.
