Made from magnesium, the first thing you notice about the ME05 pedal is how light weight they are – a pair hovers just under 290grams, which is about the same weight as the awesome DMR Vault magnesium pedal that use titanium axles.

Aside from the weight, the other thing about the HT Components ME05 magnesium pedal that stands out, is just how thin they are – just 11mm – and yet they still retain a deep feeling concave shape.

To get the body this thin, HT have a slim chromoly axle design that uses one full cartridge bearing, and two DU bushings – which spin smoothly and after nearly three months of use show no signs of play or wear.

The ME05 uses 20 removable pins per pedal, but we didn’t find that we needed to remove any to get the feel right. They felt excellent straight away and helped give the pedal a good concave feel where your foot feels ‘in’ the pedal, as opposed to balancing on top like some taller offerings.

Low profile you say? Yep, all 11mm of it, and a great concave shape

The light weight of Magnesium pedals is certainly attractive for many riders, but durability can be an issue – as the material is notoriously soft. So far we’ve noticed little in the way of damage – the low profile design helps them clear the ground, despite their huge 102 x 96mm platform, which we thought would be grounding out a lot.

At home, they’ve been perfect performers – and a week in the Alps showed no weaknesses as such, bar a few scuffs.

Jely Alps 2

Cal has been shredding the ME05 in Alp d’Huez and spent a lot of time interfacing with rocks on the infamous Megavalanche course…

One tester – Callum Jelley – rode them hard in Alp d’Huez  for a few days on some of the notoriously rocky trails and loved the feel of them – despite being reserved at first as his usual choice is a heavy duty pair of old Sunline pedals that have survived 6 seasons in Whistler…

“I really liked them; a good concave shape, enough grip in the rough and enough freedom to move your feet when you want. I clouted them off plenty of rocks in Alp D’huez and they laughed off the abuse – certainly more than their light weight magnesium body should have”

Wide, flat and stable – the HT Components ME05 is a great pedal for stomping – though the no-frills axle design isn’t the prettiest.

Jelley Alps

Cal rides hard, fast and usually right on the edge. His previous Sunline pedals are nearly double the weight – but the low profile design and light weight of the ME05 has won him over.

We say

The HT Components ME05 magnesium is super light, has an ultra grippy and stable platform and so far has resisted some seriously hard knocks and scrapes. If you still doubt magnesium, HT offer an aluminium model which is only slightly heavier, but shares the same great shape.

Flat pedals are all about the right feel – and this pedal is excellent. We love it.
