Affordable eyewear

Keeping your eyes protected from mud, wind, rain, bugs and branches is a good idea – but finding decent eyewear can be tricky.

Oakley have the high end of the market sewn up, and whilst other brands like Adidas also make decent glasses – the price is still high. This triple lens eyewear kit from Madison costs under £50 and has amazing optical clarity and performance.

At a glance the Recon looks like a far pricier set of riding glasses

The Recon glasses come as a set, with three lenses and a protective case – much like the cases that Oakley provide with eye wear.

There is a clear, yellow and mirrored lens included – all in the same shape that is big enough for all but the longest of faces. All the lenses are made by Carl Zeiss, and as well as having UV protection have no distortion or magnification – something that budget glasses are often plagued by.

Recon

Three Carl Zeiss lenses and a padded case for £50 you say?

The frame comes in a variety of bright – and boring – colours to suit all preferences, and although I probably wouldn’t pick yellow glasses normally I’ve grown to really like these. Fit is great, and the ear stems have nice rubber detailing that keep them in place on your head.

I did find with the Troy Lee Designs A1 and a couple of other helmets with cradles that they pinch if worn under the cradle – so you need to position them right for the best comfort.

Reeves

The Recon works well even with lower fitting helmets like the Troy Lee Designs A1 or the Bell Super 2R – but the cradle can make the ear stems pinch, so are best worn outside the cradle.

Apart from the last few weeks, I’ve pretty much lived in the yellow lenses – they’re the best I’ve used and although let plenty of light in to help enhance vision, didn’t once give me a head ache  – something that light enhancing lenses can do if you have sensitive vision.

The clear lens is great for year round riding, and the mirrored lens really takes off the glare but doesn’t make you feel like Ray Charles when you dive in to dappled or dark light.

The blue mirrored lens is dark and reduces glare – but isn’t so heavily tinted that you’re left fumbling in the dark

I’ve also not suffered from the lenses fogging up either – possibly a combination of the lens quality, and the shape that allows good air flow. The same airflow unfortunately made my eyes water a bit on cooler days – but still offered great protection from debris.

We say

The Recon is an incredible value set of riding glasses that come complete with three very good lenses. It’s hard not to give them a shining review when you consider the competition tends to be over double the price. If we’re being picky, we say the lenses were a bit tricky to change, and they do look a touch roadie…
